Xiaomi just debuted a brand new e-reader, dubbed the Mi Reader Pro, which is quite the upgrade over the first Mi Reader. It’s also a rival for the Amazon Kindle Oasis and it’s supposed to sell like hot cakes in China. The new e-reader offers a pretty large diagonal, lots of customization options, plus voice search.
Xiaomi Mi Reader Pro packs a 7.8 inch diagonal screen, with an E-Ink panel and 330 ppi pixel density. The screen is based on LED tech and comes with 24 levels of adjustable brightness and also the ability to change color tones from warm to cold, depending on the environment around you. That’s supposed to be less harmful for the eyes. The hardware of the newcomer includes 2 GB of RAM, 32 GB of storage, plus a quad core processor and there’s an Android Oreo-based UI.
On the connectivity front, we’ve got WiFi, Bluetooth 5.0 and there’s also support for Chinese platforms like Baidu and WeChat Reading. Xiaomi also provides its own Xiaomi AI voice functions, for easier browsing. You can also transfer books from phones if both devices are in the same wireless network. As usual for most e-readers, there’s support for Office documents, plus formats like .txt, .epub and .pdf. As far as battery life is concerned, we have a 3200 mAh unit here, which offers up to 70 days of standby. Books can also be transfered via WLAN or USB.
Available only in Black, the device is priced at $165 and can only be purchased in China. I expect an European release in a few weeks.
