Xiaomi MI 11 Ultra will be First MI Phone to Support IP68 Function

Following the announcement of Samsung’s GN2 image sensor, super-fast silicon oxide cathode battery, and full phase change cooling technology, the Mi 11 Ultra has added another global debut — a high-permeability pressure relief valve.

According to Xiaomi officials, the Mi 11 Ultra will be the company’s first phone to support IP68 water resistance (the highest dust and water resistance rating for electrical equipment), and it can be submerged in 1.5 meters of water for 30 minutes without any damage.

The Mi 11 Ultra’s first high-permeability pressure relief valve, taking inspiration from professional diving watches, is only breathable and watertight, with unit air permeability twice as much as current waterproof phones.

IP68 is already familiar to you. The so-called “6” is the highest dustproof grade of electrical equipment, which can completely prevent foreign matter and dust from entering the fuselage; “8” is the highest waterproof rating for electrical equipment, which can be immersed in water for a long time under certain pressure without being damaged.

The Mi 11 Ultra is IP68 certified by Rhinander and can be immersed in 1.5 meters of water for 30 minutes without injury.

As we all know, as the water depth increases, the water pressure will also increase, forming the pressure difference between the inside and outside of the phone, which brings great pressure and challenges to the air tightness.

So some high-end professional diving table is equipped with a pressure relief valve, which can let the air flow in the case of water leakage, to achieve the internal and external pressure balance of the mobile phone.

The Xiaomi mi 11 Ultra ‘s high-permeability pressure relief valve works on the same principle, allowing only air to be breathed, not water, and allowing up to 25,000 ml/min of air per unit at 7kPa, twice as much as current waterproof phones.

In addition, the high permeability relief valve not only reduces the probability of damage in deep water to a certain extent, but also helps when taking off and landing on an phone, in and out of extremely hot and cold environments, or when the phone is being squeezed.

Of course, having IP68 is not foolproof. Any IP68 device is not permanently effective, and with daily use, such as wear and tear, it will cause a loss of airtight performance, resulting in water risk.
