Samsung Announces iSocell HM3 Image Sensor

Samsung today announced the iSocell HM3 CMOS image sensor. This product is 108 megapixels, 1/1.33 inch large bottom, pixel size 0.8 micron. The sensor has pixel 9 in 1 capability for enhanced tolerance and autofocus performance.

This is Samsung’s fourth image sensor with more than 100 million pixels. It uses the Super PD Plus phase focus feature, which adds a microlens above the phase focus, thus increasing the focusing speed by 50%. In addition, focus performance in low light has also been improved.

To ensure high light ratio performance, the Samsung HM3 sensor uses Smart ISO technology to capture images at both high and low ISO levels and combine them into high dynamic range images at 12bit depth. This method also reduces noise and does not require multiple exposures to obtain HDR images, so phone can be significantly reduced. In low-noise mode, the sensor is 50 percent more sensitive than previous products, resulting in improved low-light images.

Samsung’s HM3 Pixel Merge feature allows nine pixels to be combined into a single 2.4 micron wide megapixel to take a 12-megapixel photo, which can enhance low-light performance. In addition, the new ISP is capable of seamlessly switching between 108-megapixel and 12-megapixel shots. The power consumption of the sensor’s real-time preview state is also reduced by 6.5%.

The Samsung HM3 sensor also has upgraded video performance, supporting up to 8K 30fps video and 4K 120fps video. For 1080P video, the frame rate is up to 240fps, the same as the HM1 sensor. Samsung says the image sensor is currently in mass production.
