Despite the setbacks of recent years in the smartphone market and even the emergence of plans to sell this business, LG continues to develop new devices from this category. So, at CES 2021, the company showed a prototype of a sliding smartphone “LG Rollable” and today LG patented another model that was issued on February 9, 2021. There are many sketches in the documentation showing what this device looks like.
As we can see, the new patented smartphone of LG has two displays – front and rear. The front one is of course more interesting because firstly it reaches all the edges of the phone and has no indentations or holes, and secondly, it is flexible and expandable.
Its surface area grows when you move the device apart, thanks to which we get about 40% larger screen working area. The second display is located on the rear panel and covers almost its entire surface, although in this case the frames around are much wider than on the front. In addition, the display has a large indentation in the upper right corner, caused by the built-in camera lenses.
One of the striking things in the patent is that no physical keys are visible, but the situation is not the first in the smartphone industry. Some models, such as the Huawei Mate 40 Pro, added virtual buttons instead of physical keys by enlarging the curved screen. This is an indication that LG is determined to try things we haven’t seen so far in its upcoming smartphone.
According to the LetsGoDigital website, LG Rollable will be included in the Explorer Project, under which the most innovative products of the Korean manufacturer are to be created. The first phone from this project, the LG Wing model, is already on the market.
Now the question remains whether LG will release such a smartphone on the market as in the patent, and how much it will cost. LG’s mobile department is not doing very well recently, and there have even been rumors that the Korean company wants to abandon the production of phones.
